The Forum for Radical Imagination on Environmental Cultures at TNOC presents a collection of short artist and documentary films that draw us into radically different modes of COMMUNICATION, AWARENESS, CARE, SOLUTIONS, and CONNECTIONS.

These FIVE film programs premiere at the virtual segment of TNOC Festival 2024. After the premiere dates listed below, the film programs are available on-demand until mid-June.

Short Film Program 1 – Radical Communication

Premieres April 15, 7:45pm KST / 12:45pm CEST

Radical storytelling and new ways of seeing what ecological communication can mean. Films in this program include:

The Hidden Life of a Pavement Crack by Susanne Elizabeth Wieland (10 mins)
Discover the hidden ecosystem thriving within a London pavement crack, offering insights into cultural and ecological values beneath our urban landscape.

I Was Born Before You
by Laëtitia Striffling-Marcu and Laure Wauters (3 minutes)
A music video produced for Lauriane Petit’s song of the same name, which explores our relationship with what came before us and what we are leaving behind. In these still lifes, human artifacts both contemporary and ancient old are destroyed under the effects of time, which seems to be accelerating.

Locus Amoenus by Orestis Athanasopoulos (14 mins)
Explore the concept of “pleasant place” through the harmonious elements of trees, grass, and water, offering a secluded landscape that functions as a sanctuary for the mind.

Short Film Program 3 – Radical Care

Solidarity in Nature: Reclaiming Connection to the Land through Hip-Hop by Planet Chambo (2 mins)
Produced by Creative Capitol LLC, this film showcases how hip-hop and art connect artists to nature, fostering a community ready to reclaim their connection to the land and support environmental initiatives worldwide.

Growing A Green Heart by Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo (18 mins)
Join a community gathering-walk-workshop in Van Cortlandt Park, where participants forge deep connections with the surrounding ecosystem, awakening a personal bond with nature.

Still Suite by Brad Muirhead (22 mins) Experience an ethereal blend of original music and dance at the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival, paying tribute to the last remaining segment of reclaimed natural salmon creek in Vancouver. Performed by “Treesong” with handmade wooden instruments, the music celebrates the harmony between art, nature, and community.

The Fruit of the Oak by Alejandro Jiménez (3 mins)
This short film pays tribute to Frederic Back’s “The Man Who Planted Trees” (1987), immersing us in a profound journey through the legacy of a forest, where echoes of the past resonate with the promise of the future, as narrated by Louis, once a young boy and now an adult.
